Origin Notes:
Tanzania Mwangoka Farm Natural Green Coffee
The Grivas family has managed GDM Farm for over two decades, representing the second generation overseeing one of the few Tanzanian-owned coffee estates. Under Richard Grivas’s leadership, the focus is on enhancing both coffee quality and local community development. The farm employs over 200 seasonal workers and supports a network of smallholder farmers in the surrounding area. Notably, only about 5% of Tanzania’s green coffee originates from large estates. GDM Farm covers 400 hectares at an altitude of 1980 meters above sea level in the southern highlands, near the Mbozi meteorite discovered in the 1930s.
GDM Farm in Tanzania annually produces 300 metric tons of washed Arabica and 100 metric tons of natural Arabica green coffee. While most Tanzanian coffee is wash processed, estates like GDM have the capacity to employ less common natural processing methods to highlight diverse flavor profiles. Harvested ripe cherries are brought directly to the estate’s pulping and drying facilities, where they are hand-sorted to separate ripe, overripe, and underripe fruits. The cherries then dry on raised beds for up to 21 days, depending on weather conditions, with frequent turning to ensure even drying and maintain quality. Additionally, GDM Farm operates an on-site milling station to prepare the dried cherries for export.
