Origin Notes:

Rooted in the Swahili principles of balance and coffee, the Usawa Kahawa Project champions gender equity in Tanzania's coffee sector. Founded in 2021 by Genuine Origin, this initiative focuses on two core objectives: cultivating gender champions and implementing community learning systems, while simultaneously expanding production through women-centered training and farm development. Every purchase supports meaningful progress toward inclusive agricultural practices.

This lot originates from the Hezya Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society (AMCOS) in Mbozi, which manages 95% of Tanzania's coffee supply chain. AMCOS membership is essential for smallholders to access critical infrastructure—from production support and processing facilities to storage, logistics, and market access. Without this cooperative framework, these farmers' coffees would remain isolated from the global marketplace, making this partnership vital to their success.

Produced by nearly 300 smallholder farmers within the Hezya AMCOS, this coffee comes from sub-hectare plots situated between 1,590 and 1,670 meters elevation in Tanzania's ideal growing conditions. The cooperative cultivates Bourbon, N39, Kent, and indigenous varieties, collectively yielding 64 metric tons annually. This microlot represents the collaborative effort of dedicated growers working at optimal altitude for exceptional cup quality.

Beyond agronomic instruction, Usawa Kahawa Project participants receive comprehensive training on gender equity's role in household coffee production and financial management. Community-based gender champions—embedded within the Hezya AMCOS—lead this educational work and established the Shamba Darasa Model Farm to demonstrate advanced cultivation techniques and foster systemic change through peer mentorship and practical example.
