Origin Notes:  Karnataka, the epicenter of India's coffee culture, thrives with the lush, aromatic brilliance of its Arabica plantations. Nestled across the southern states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu at altitudes ranging from 700 to 1,200 meters, these regions account for 90% of India’s coffee output. This specialty lot, sourced through a partnership with Allanasons, delivers a harmonious blend of flavors, featuring sweet notes of milk chocolate, red apple, and cane sugar.

What is Peaberry Coffee?

Peaberry coffee is a rare natural phenomenon where a single round seed forms inside the coffee cherry instead of the usual two. These smaller, denser beans are prized for their unique shape and vibrant flavor profile. Only about 1 in 9 coffee cherries produce a peaberry, making them a labor-intensive yet cherished selection.

Specialty Indian Arabica Coffee

In India, coffee is grown under the shade of evergreen leguminous trees on smallholder farms, typically less than 10 hectares. These farms often interplant coffee with spices like pepper, cardamom, and vanilla, as well as fruits like orange and banana, adding diversity to the ecosystem.

Prominent Arabica varietals in India include S795—a hybrid of Kent and S228—and Cauvery, a local sub-variety of Catimor. While India is celebrated for its Monsooned Malabar coffee, known for its distinct processing that replicates the humid conditions of colonial-era sea voyages, most Arabica beans (about 80%) are wash-processed, creating clean and refined flavor profiles.

India’s Coffee Naming Conventions

India’s coffee grading system uses unique terms:

  • Washed Arabica beans are labeled “Plantation” (not tied to estate-grown coffee).
  • Washed Robusta beans are called “Parchment.”
  • Natural-processed beans, whether Arabica or Robusta, are referred to as “Cherry.”

The term “Plantation PB” identifies Washed Arabica Peaberry coffee grown in India.

A Legacy of Indian Coffee

Indian coffee traces its roots to the 17th century when Arabica seeds were first smuggled from Yemen and planted in Karnataka. While commercial coffee farming took off in the mid-19th century, challenges like leaf rust pushed many farms toward Robusta cultivation. Today, Arabica production faces further pressure from climate change, high labor costs (which make up 60% of production expenses), and disease susceptibility. Despite these challenges, Indian Arabica remains a treasured offering for coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

Indulge in the essence of Karnataka’s coffee heritage with this exceptional Arabica Peaberry selection—crafted for those who seek a perfect balance of tradition and flavor.
