Origin
Hacienda La Amistad
Hacienda La Amistad is a third-generation, family-owned estate nestled in the highlands of Coto Brus, Puntarenas, in southwestern Costa Rica. During the 1980s, the farm shifted toward an environmentally centered agricultural approach, prioritizing restoration, conservation, and coexistence with the surrounding forest ecosystems. Today, the estate cultivates a range of organic crops—including organic coffee—while also supporting ecotourism efforts.
Hacienda La Amistad is now regarded as one of the largest producers of organic coffee in Central America, offering beans processed through washed, honey, and natural methods.
Organic Green Coffee Beans
All coffee grown at Hacienda La Amistad is certified organic and cultivated in alignment with the natural environment. The farm’s dedication to sustainability and biodiversity is evident in its practices, which eliminate synthetic inputs while enhancing soil vitality and protecting local wildlife.
Natural Processing
The natural, or dry, processing method involves drying the entire coffee cherry with the fruit still attached. This approach produces rich, fruit-forward, and wine-like flavor profiles. At Hacienda La Amistad, this process is carefully managed to maintain a balance of sweetness and acidity while preserving the quality of the organic beans.
Costa Rican Coffee Grading System
Coffee in Costa Rica is graded based on altitude and sorting standards. Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) designates coffee grown at elevations above 1,200 meters, where slower maturation allows sugars and flavors to fully develop. These beans are typically denser than those grown at lower elevations.
European Preparation (EP) signifies a rigorous sorting and cleaning process, ensuring the beans are free from defects and any foreign material.
Costa Rican Coffee History
Costa Rica has earned a strong reputation for producing high-quality coffee while leading in innovation—a combination that sets it apart globally. This, along with the country’s advanced socio-economic infrastructure—such as universal healthcare, high education levels, progressive agronomy and research, and well-regulated sustainability initiatives—contributes to the premium pricing of its coffee. Additionally, Costa Rican farmers are guaranteed to receive nearly 80% of the coffee’s FOB (Free on Board) value.
