Uraga Washing Station
The Guji-Uraga washing station, managed by Kuri Mountain Coffee and led by producer Habtamu Fekadu Aga, was established in 2015 and is situated in Koba, within the Uraga/Solomo district of Ethiopia’s Guji Zone. Positioned at elevations between 2000 and 2250 meters, it is surrounded by highland terrain near Dimtu Ambella and Yirgacheffe. The station supports approximately 450 smallholder farmers cultivating garden coffee across 500 hectares. This coffee features a light body, bright acidity, a washed process, and a moisture content of 10.60%.
The Guji Zone
Guji, a prominent coffee-growing region in southern Ethiopia, is distinguished by its fertile loamy soil and optimal altitude for Arabica coffee cultivation. Coffees from this area are prized for their lively acidity, floral aromas, and intricate flavor characteristics.
Washed Processing
At Guji-Uraga, this coffee undergoes a washed (wet) processing method that includes mechanical removal of mucilage, followed by soaking and drying. The beans are sun-dried in shaded conditions on elevated African beds for 11 to 13 days. Wastewater is carefully treated according to pH levels to maintain environmental sustainability. This process accentuates the coffee’s clarity and brightness, showcasing the distinctive characteristics of its terroir.
Ethiopian Coffee History
Ethiopia is often recognized as the origin of coffee, with the story of Kaldi, the goat herder who first noticed coffee’s stimulating properties, forming a key part of its heritage. The country’s coffee culture is rich in tradition, featuring ceremonies that honor coffee’s social and spiritual importance. Ethiopia’s varied microclimates and native heirloom varieties play a crucial role in establishing its reputation for producing some of the world’s most unique and exceptional coffees.
