At Hill Tree Roastery, we’re proud to bring you a truly exceptional coffee from Tanzania, grown by the dedicated members of the Isaiso Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society (AMCOS). Established in 2008, Isaiso AMCOS is home to 350 smallholder farmers, each tending to coffee plants on 1-2 hectares of land, high in the hills at 1350-1490 meters above sea level. Their hard work and commitment to quality paid off when they won the prestigious Tanzania Fine Coffee Competition in 2023 with this exquisite peaberry coffee.
In Tanzania, AMCOS cooperatives play a vital role in supporting 95% of the country’s coffee production. These cooperatives provide smallholder farmers with access to essential resources such as production support, processing facilities, storage, transport, and marketing, ensuring their coffee reaches international markets. Without the AMCOS, many of these incredible beans would never make it beyond local borders.
Peaberry Coffee – A Rare Delight
Peaberries are a unique and rare mutation in coffee cherries, where only one seed forms instead of two. This gives peaberries their distinctive round shape, denser structure, and complex flavor profile. With only about 1 in 9 cherries yielding a peaberry, each bean is hand-sorted with care and precision, making this coffee even more special.
A Commitment to Quality – Washed Process Coffee
The farmers at Isaiso deliver their freshly harvested cherries to Coffee Production Units (CPUs) on the same day. Here, the cherries are carefully sorted and pulped, with the beans undergoing a traditional washed processing method. The beans ferment in tanks for up to 72 hours before being washed and graded, ensuring that only the densest, highest-quality beans are selected. These beans are then sun-dried on raised beds for up to 14 days, capturing the essence of the region’s climate and soil in every cup.
Why Peaberry Coffee Stands Out
Peaberry coffee from Tanzania is highly sought after, and with good reason. The peaberry classification (PB) is recognized as one of the most prized in Tanzanian coffee grading, showcasing small, yet flavor-packed beans. This coffee is a true testament to the dedication of Tanzanian farmers and the rich coffee heritage of the region.
